Chaplain Training Calls begin Sept. 24

As an FCA chaplain at Mississippi State University, Josh Gilreath has become familiar with how isolated a chaplain can feel at times. He knows firsthand that there are points when chaplains need to be encouraged in their ministry and equipped to serve their coaches and athletes better.

So for Gilreath, the new FCA chaplain training conference calls are the perfect addition to the FCA ministry. It's an idea generated by a few people, including Gilreath, Sports Specific Ministry Vice President Sean McNamara and other members on the chaplains' advisory council.

"We were seeing how God was moving in that particular ministry, the chaplains' ministry, so we wanted to come up with a way to better equip and encourage our chaplains," Gilreath said. "It's really just a way to try to serve them."

The first of the monthly chaplain training calls will be at 10 a.m. CST on Thursday, Sept. 24. The conference call number is (712) 451-6025, access code 1036470#. The calls are open to all chaplains, even those not affiliated with FCA.

The 30-minute session will consist of a 5-minute opening prayer, then a 20-minute talk from John Ed Mathison, who has more than 45 years of ministry experience, about "How to be an encourager even in discouraging times." After Mathison is finished, there will be a 5-minute question-and-answer segment.

For those unable to dial in for the call, the segments will be recorded and posted as podcasts on a website in the future. The session in October will feature Ken Whitten on "Cultivating the Gift of Teaching," and November's call will have Tommy Nelson talking about "Using Time Wisely."

"There's so much fruit within the chaplains' ministry that this has great potential," Gilreath said. "I feel like we're really jumping in on what God is doing. God is really moving in the chaplain ministry, and by doing this we're really getting on board with His agenda."
